Replacing a bath with a shower in Barcelona
Published price
490–595€ VAT included
€490 to €595, VAT included, for a like-for-like swap in the same opening: bath removed, shower tray, screen, and the tiling made good around it. One day’s work, two if the tray has to be bedded and left to set.
It is the bathroom job people ask for most and publish least. Here is the price, and the two situations where it is not the right thing to do.
What that price covers
- Removing the bath and whatever tiling has to come off to get it out.
- A resin or porcelain shower tray, sized to the opening the bath leaves.
- A toughened glass screen.
- New shower taps.
- Making good and sealing the tiling around the perimeter, matching the existing tile as closely as it can be matched.
- Taking the rubble away.
What it does not cover, and you should know first
It does not include retiling the whole bathroom. Making good is done on the strip left open when the bath comes out, and however hard you look, a thirty-year-old tile does not come back the same: the line shows.
It does not include moving the waste. If the new tray cannot discharge where the bath discharged, the floor has to come up, and that is a different job.
And it does not include a level-access shower. Bringing the tray flush with the floor means either dropping into the slab or lifting the whole bathroom floor; that is a bathroom renovation, not a swap.
When a full bathroom is the better buy
There are two clear cases. The first is that the tiling is in poor condition, or you simply do not like it: you will pay for a partial make-good and end up with the bathroom you already had, plus a strip that does not match.
The second is that the services are old. If an unearthed socket or a seized valve turns up when the wall opens, you fix that and the rest of the bathroom is still just as old. In both cases the full renovation costs more and does not have to be repeated in five years.
Accessibility
If the reason for the change is that somebody elderly cannot get a leg over the side of the bath, say so when you call. It changes what needs looking at during the survey: tray height, where the grab rails go, whether the screen should fold back, and whether the opening leaves room to get in with a walking frame.
These are decisions that cost nothing extra if they are made beforehand, and a lot if they are made afterwards.
Bathroom renovation in Barcelona
A complete bathroom of 4 to 6 m². Building work, mid-range materials and labour. This is the range most bathrooms of this size fall into in Barcelona’s housing stock. The firm price is set by the builder in writing after the visit.
Questions we are always asked
- Can it be done in a day?
- Usually yes. If the tray has to be bedded in mortar rather than sat on feet, it needs to set and the job goes to two days.
- Do I need the residents’ association to agree?
- No, as long as no shared soil pipe is touched and nothing outside your own flat is altered. It is worth telling them which day it is, for the noise and the use of the lift.
- What if I want a level-access shower?
- Then it is not a swap. Going level means lifting the bathroom floor, and from that point the full renovation is the better buy: the published bathroom range already includes a level-access shower.
