What a kitchen renovation costs in Barcelona
Published price
5,000–8,800€ VAT included
€5,000–8,800, VAT included, for a kitchen of 6 to 10 m². Four to six weeks. That is the range we publish; the firm price is fixed in writing after the survey.
The kitchen range is wider than the bathroom range, for one specific reason: the units and appliances can cost as much as all the building work put together.
Why the kitchen range is so wide
In a bathroom, standard and premium materials are a few hundred euros apart. In a kitchen they are thousands apart. A laminate door front and a bespoke lacquered one do the same job and do not cost the same, and induction hobs run one to five on price.
That is why the range runs €5,000 to €8,800: the bottom is a complete kitchen with standard units, and the top is the same building work with higher-range units and appliances.
What makes a kitchen expensive and does not show on a plan
- Moving the extraction duct, which in many older buildings means routing through the lightwell and getting the residents’ association to agree.
- Taking the water supply and waste to a different wall, which is what happens every time a kitchen is opened up to the living room.
- Upgrading the contracted electrical supply, because an induction hob and an oven running together do not fit a 1970s installation.
- Removing rubble from a building with no lift: above the second floor, carrying it down by hand is a real line in the budget.
Opening the kitchen up to the living room
It is the most common request and the one that varies most in price, because it depends entirely on whether the wall you want to take out is load-bearing.
If it is not, it is a strip-out, a supporting beam and making the floor good. If it is, you need drawings signed by an engineer, a structural calculation and a major-works licence, and that changes both the programme and the budget. It gets checked at the survey, before any figure is given.
VAT: why we charge 21% and not 10%
Every price on this page includes VAT at 21%. It is what you pay, not a figure the tax gets added to afterwards.
A reduced 10% rate does exist for renovation work on homes more than two years old (art. 91.Uno.2.10º of the Spanish VAT Act), but it only applies where the materials the company supplies stay under 40% of the taxable base. On a bathroom or a kitchen, where tiling, sanitaryware and units are half the budget, that condition is not reliably met.
A price whose tax rate depends on a condition the customer cannot check is not a published price. So we publish the rate we will actually charge, and we do not promise the other one.
The income-tax deduction for energy efficiency
Spain’s personal income tax (IRPF) deduction for work that improves a home’s energy performance runs until 31 December 2026. There are three bands, depending on what an energy certificate can demonstrate before and after: 20%, 40% or 60% of what you spend, each with its own cap.
It is not a grant and it is not paid up front. It is claimed on the following year’s tax return, and it requires an energy certificate issued by a qualified technician both before work starts and after it finishes.
The Next Generation renovation grants closed on 30 June 2026. Royal Decree 326/2026 has been published but is not yet claimable, so as things stand the IRPF deduction is the only route open.
Kitchen renovation in Barcelona
A complete kitchen of 6 to 10 m². Building work, mid-range units, worktop, basic-line appliances and labour. Without moving the services. The firm price is set by the builder in writing after the visit.
Questions we are always asked
- Are appliances included?
- The ones integrated into the units are, in the standard range. A freestanding fridge or dishwasher is not, because most people already have one or want to choose it themselves.
- How long am I without a kitchen?
- Four to six weeks. Most of that is not building work: it is the manufacturing lead time on made-to-measure units, which are ordered once the final measurements are taken and arrive when they arrive.
- Can the kitchen be renovated without changing the layout?
- Yes, and it is by far the cheaper option. Keeping the sink, the extraction and the services where they are saves the most expensive part of the installation, and the visible result is the same.
